As your local election candidate for Cabra-Glasnevin, I am deeply committed to advancing the River Tolka (Glasnevin) Biodiversity and Community Project proposed by the Glasnevin Village Residents Association (GVRA). This project, which has received €15,000 in funding from Dublin City Council, holds significant promise for enhancing our local environment. Supported by LAWPRO (the Local Authority Water Programme), this initiative aims to implement various aspects of the comprehensive report commissioned in 2021 by the GVRA.
Current Challenges and My Commitment
Unfortunately, despite the allocated funding and detailed planning, the project has encountered numerous roadblocks:
Mayfly Corner Site: Dublin City Council has indicated “numerous challenges” with the proposed Mayfly Corner site. This delay is perplexing given the thorough planning and preparation invested by the GVRA over the past two years.
Actions for Otters and Swifts: While the Council continues to work on actions related to otters and swifts, a substantial update is only expected by June 2024, delaying crucial environmental actions.
Invasive Species and Riparian Tree Planting: These actions have been transferred to a separate section within the Council, causing further delays and hindering progress.
These delays are unacceptable. The project, which began with so much promise, has seen little progress, resulting in the loss of additional funding due to the inability to draw it down in time.
My Pledge to You
If elected, I pledge to remove these roadblocks and ensure this project moves forward effectively and efficiently. I will:
Advocate Relentlessly: I will advocate for the River Tolka Biodiversity and Community Project at every level of local government, ensuring it receives the attention and resources it deserves.
Enhance Collaboration: I will work closely with Dublin City Council, LAWPRO, and other relevant bodies to address and overcome the challenges cited, particularly at the Mayfly Corner site.
Ensure Accountability: I will hold the Council accountable for timely updates and tangible progress, particularly concerning actions for otters, swifts, and invasive species management.
Maximize Funding Opportunities: I will strive to secure additional funding and ensure existing funds are utilised effectively and promptly.
Please give me your #1 Vote in the Local Elections for the Cabra-Glasnevin LEA on June 7th. Together, we can transform this initiative into a reality, bringing ecological and communal benefits to our village.
Let’s work together to make the River Tolka (Glasnevin) Biodiversity and Community Project a shining example of environmental stewardship and community collaboration. Your support and my commitment can turn this vision into a vibrant reality.
